Oscar Mitchell.
Candidate for VP Societies & Sport
Hi everyone!
My name is Oscar Mitchell, I’m a 3rd and final year biology student and Royal Holloway and I’d like to tell you why I’m running for vice president of societies and sports!
I joined Royal Holloway during 2020, affectionately known as the “COVID Year”, and despite the online and distanced nature of the year, found that societies were managing to run and provided a welcoming environment, basically being the sole reason I was able to make friends and not just sat in my room… This led me to greatly appreciate our sporting and societal communities, as they offer so many people the chance to try new things and meet new people, and as your vice president, I would endeavour to introduce as many people as possible to the amazing experiences I’ve had.
I have had a heavy involvement in societies at Royal Holloway, being both president of the Anime/Manga society and social secretary of biological sciences society, allowing me to have a firm grasp of the problems faced by societies and their members, with the main issues I would seek to resolve being:
- Updating the treasury system by making the “restricted” account easier to use for non-sporting societies and pushing for faster reimbursements
- Making sports teams and societies less intimidating to join mid-way through the year via a second “refreshers fair”
- Increasing promotion for smaller sports teams, fixtures and societal events on the SU socials
- Pushing to make all sports teams, societies and SU events welcoming, accessible and safe for all LGBTQ+, POC and disabled students
I will also endeavour to attend at least one of every societal and sport group meeting in order to directly hear the issues that students at Royal Holloway face, increasing communication between students and the SU and allowing me to effectively gather what problems the university faces.
I love working with people, I love being part of the RHUL community and I want to enhance the student experience for everyone, so if that sounds like something you’d be interested in, consider voting for me!
Thank you for reading!
