Candidate for VP Societies & Sport

I’m a third-year biology student fighting for equality, student safety and inclusivity, which is why I’m running for the Vice President of Sports and Societies.

If elected, I would look into implementing the following objectives:

Student Group Support

  • Helping financially support societies and sports teams through sponsorships and advertisement deals by working closely with the marketing coordinator of the SU.
  • Quicker turnover for purchase requests and event approvals - work within the SU to try and increase the number of resources within the student opportunities department.
  • Revamp room booking system - lobby with the university.
  • Look at a bigger society ball celebration.
  • Promote more collaborations between sports and societies -
  • More societies and sports cafés - dedicate time in my schedule to hold at least one café per month, where issues can be bought up and solutions discussed

Access

  • Improve accessibility to societies and sports clubs both physically and financially.
  • Rebrand the access fund and reiterate eligibility criteria.
  • Promote ‘Give-it-a-go’ activities: alternate on a weekly basis between smaller activities and larger-scale activities.
  • Revamp the Freshers Week ‘24 - More interactive Freshers' fair with more space and Founder's field activities alongside the club nights.

Student Safety

  • Continue to work with security to provide a safer environment for students - Implement consistent searching and discuss the possibility of introducing metal detectors
  • Provide training to student committees on how to host safe socials outside of SU venues.
  • Promote more inclusive societies and sports.
  • Advocate for a sports kit that is inclusive for all cultures
  • More taster sessions and promotion periods for sports and societies to breakdown the stigma around trying new activities
  • Encourage more diverse, alcohol-free socials
  • Create an environment that promotes both individuality and teamwork within sports and societies.

What makes me a good candidate:

I am a diligent and attentive candidate with lots of experience in managing events, people, and socials. I am pragmatic and see things objectively and holistically, allowing me to make sound choices that benefit the majority whilst also considering the minority. Some examples of my achievements and previous work include the following:

  • Experience in society and sports committees: station manager of Insanity Radio and Treasurer of M.M.A, both highly intensive roles that required sharp organisational skills.
  • Consistent attendance and engagement with all university open days since 2020.
  • Establish a relationship with the SU and the Insanity Radio Advisory Committee to work towards the growth of the station.
