Alastair Copland.
Candidate for VP Societies & Sport
Sports and Societies are incredibly important to the social and student experience at university, and I'm running for VPSocSport because I want to help make it better.
Being a member of multiple groups, and leading Athletics as its President this year, has taught me both how important Societies and Sport on campus is, but also hard and difficult it can be to lead them. With my policies below, alongside my experience with leadership roles in committee, I can help make SocSports next academic year the best it can be.
My key three areas are:
1. A Human approach to the Students Union
As VPSocSport, I want to help build a stronger connection between the Students Union and Student Groups.
This can be achieved both through improved communication and response, with faster replies to emails and tickets, and more recognition, gratitude, and connection with Student Groups.
2. Equal support for both Sports and Societies, regardless of size
All Committee work is hard work, and all Student Groups are equally valuable, regardless if it’s a sport, society, or how many members. No sport deserves to have its support neglected because it is niche, or society devalued because it is not a sport.
3. Support and Funding for Student Groups
Leading a society or sport is hard, and the Students Union should do everything it can to support committee members. More money can bring down membership costs and bring opportunities to your club. The Students Union can help through sponsorship opportunities, development funds and financial grants to struggling Student Groups. More support, more help, and more training for committee members.
The Sports and Societies at RHUL have made my university experience, and with your vote I can give back to the university and help make SocSport’s next academic year the best it can be.
