Freya Fulcher.
Candidate for School of Life Sciences & the Environment
My diversified involvement through societies and sports has built a strong appreciation around student voice and I am committed to learning new strategies and innovative ideas to improve the LSE school on behalf of its peers. #FreyforChange.
I believe there needs to be a stronger cohesiveness of communication and interdisciplinary thinking in the school of LSE and I will encourage the cross departmental study and interaction between the students. Although the opportunity to take modules from different departments is available, this connection is relatively weak and should be advertised more. I would like to ensure there is collaborative spaces across all LSE departments, so students can engage with each other’s interests to tighten the community. This can be set up via weekly coffee mornings or through society interactions. Undergrad-postgrad partnerships should be tightened to exhibit life beyond a three-year bachelor’s degree.
I will enhance the available academic support offered to students, as well as work with the careers office to improve it. Students will benefit from a larger variety of career sessions, academic outside speakers, and readily available academic workshops across all platforms. With a possible future adaptation of online learning, I believe the above has not been met and support finding a career has not been fulfilled in times of need. Ultimately, there should be greater opportunities for you to fulfill your potential and find your why.
I will lobby for good quality feedback and up to date marking from LSE, so nobody is left in the dark about any piece of work. Communication during a pandemic was more vital than ever and grades should reflect ongoing circumstances. Your voice will be heard; an improved system for appeals, complaints and suggestions will be put forward.
Communication and support from personal tutors should be maintained and student buddy programs, where first years are paired with an older student whom they can ask for assistance will be put in place for each department.
I would like to encourage a stronger use of department spaces to advertise your projects, reports, posters, and presentations, to make the school a creative space for everyone. I believe there should be an online portal where this work can also be displayed and congratulated, as well as on social media platforms, such as the wider use of the Facebook LSE group. We need to show people who we are and the community we have created.
