Candidate for President

#HandItToHENN for SU President:

1. Covid-19 Recovery

Covid-19 recovery needs to be safe, informed and student focused. I support and promote the continuation of a ‘blended approach’ - not just to online learning but to all services on campus. The Digital Education 2.0 insight report has provided crucial feedback and recommendations for online learning and virtual services. As President, I will oversee the application of these recommendations to ensure student interests are upheld.

Why?

  • Working closely with the Collectives I have heard first-hand the positive impact the online transition has had on particular communities, especially the Disabled community. I aim to sustain inclusive education and offer a choice to continue online or face-to-face learning and virtual or in-person services once the restrictions are relaxed.

2. Decolonise RHUL

I aim to apply the recommendations of the ‘BAME’ Report (published 2020). Notably recommendation 6: Diversify the Curriculum. Diversification or decolonisation is by no means a small task; therefore, I intend to conduct a policy inquiry into decolonising RHUL.

Why?

  • A Colonised curriculum is a major contributor to the ‘BAME’ attainment gap. Nationally, ‘BAME’ students are 20% less likely to achieve a 1st / 2:1 degree classification in comparison to their White peers.
  • Focused research on decolonisation will ensure the SU and University are doing everything possible to provide an accurate portrayal of history and provide students with the tools to critically identify any reproduction of colonial hierarchies.

3. Address Resource Issues in Wellbeing Services

As VP Wellbeing & Diversity I have seen the enormous workload expected of staff within the Wellbeing Services. I will conduct an insight report to produce a strategy that proactively addresses and improves this.

Why?

  • Mental health and wellbeing support for students is non-negotiable. As RHUL expands so should the support services. It is crucial combat resource issues to ensure to all present and future students are able to access support they need.

4. Review Student Misconduct Policies

I aim to work with the University and students to review and address the failings of the misconduct policy, e.g. I will ensure that online abuse is accounted for and reasonable sanctions are in place.

Why?

  • Students expressed frustration with the lack of transparency surrounding misconduct investigations held by the University. The best way to resolve this is unity, student’s involvement in this process will aid University’s understanding of student values.
