Pickleball

About

Pickleball is a fast-growing paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Played on a court roughly the size of a badminton court, the game involves hitting a perforated plastic ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net. Players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials. It can be played in singles or doubles, making it a versatile option for various age groups and skill levels.

The sport was invented in 1965 by three dads in Bainbridge Island, Washington, looking to entertain their bored children during summer. They improvised with available equipment, eventually creating what is now known as pickleball. The sport's unique name is often attributed to the inventor's dog, Pickles, who loved to chase the ball, though some accounts suggest it refers to the "pickle boat" in crew rowing.

Pickleball's appeal lies in its accessibility—it's easy to learn for beginners but still challenging for seasoned players. The game emphasises strategy, agility, and quick reflexes, making it both mentally engaging and physically demanding.

Primarily played in doubles (with a partner), the sport offers a great opportunity to make friends and interact with other students at Royal Holloway.
