As part of my ongoing campaign to improve student safety at Royal Holloway, I’m sharing the results from last term’s student safety survey and the next steps the University is taking!
>> about the project
The Students’ Union launched the Student Safety Survey in Term One to get your feedback on how safe you feel in Egham and Englefield Green.
506 of you responded across all year groups and thank you so much for doing so. It painted a holistic view of your experience in the area and is extremely valuable lobbying material for us as a Students’ Union.
I utilised this data and shared it with the University and local council and community groups. Keep reading to find out the results!
>>The results
We had 506 students respond across all year groups and residence types about how they get home after spending time at Royal Holloway.

We asked students to talk about which areas around Royal Holloway need better street lighting and how it impacts their feelings of safety.

The Back Gate has been a key issue for many years, and we asked students their thoughts about it being closed after midnight and the possibility of opening it 24/7.
Students talked about their experience and satisfaction with the White Bus Service late at night.

Finally, we learned that 64 per cent of respondents feel safe to an extent in the local area around campus.

>>Next Steps
So far, the University has made a commitment to improving the lighting on campus. I’m sure you’ve seen the increased lighting around the back gate and we’re very pleased with the University’s commitment to student safety and listening to student feedback. We will be speaking with the council to further improve the bus services too.
Last week, I attended the Royal Holloway and Runnymede Consultative Group (RHRCG) meeting to advocate for extending the opening hours of the Spring Rise (Back) Gate, and I will have an update on the results of that meeting soon.
