When I ran to be President, one of my main manifesto points was to do a full review of SU security. I know how important student safety is to you and I’m really excited to be delivering on this manifesto point! This term, we’ve been working hard to listen to your thoughts and create an action plan to ensure you feel safe in our venues.

In January we ran an all-student SU Security Survey where we asked about your experience in our late-night venues (the Union Venue nightclub, Medicine and The Packhorse) during the Autumn Term. In the past, we’ve only shared the results of our surveys in final reports. However, going forward we want to give you more regular, digestible updates on research projects as they’re happening. Our amazing Student Voice team have analysed the results and we want to share some of what we’ve learned about students’ experience with SU Security on nights out.

What we learned

59 % feel very safe or safe, 23 % feel neither safe nor unsafe, 18 % feel unsafe or very unsafe in the Union Venue Nightclub

Top three words that describe the current security team’s attitude and presence: Friendly, Unfriendly and Aggressive
Top two words that describe current security handling and processes: Efficient and Safe

What's next?

These are just some of the figures we’ve pulled from the survey. All the results, as well as comments about security we received from this year’s Speak Week, will be shared in our final Student Insight Report which will examine our current Security team and processes. The report will also include a list of recommendations written with an aim to increase your feelings of safety and security in our venues and with our Security team and have a positive impact on your experience at our events.
