This month, we are recognising Computer Science and Mathematics Course Rep, William Coote, as Rep of the Month.
From pushing changes to improve the experience for Joint Honours students during module selection to granting access to a module for Computer Science and Maths students to take, William has been busy representing students’ academic interests and improving their course experience.
Why did you want to become an academic rep?
I wanted to become a rep because I saw there were issues within the department of a lack of communication between the students and staff. Specifically for people on joint honours courses as their lines of communication were completely different across either department.
What are your plans for the rest of the year as an academic rep?
So, there’s only one meeting left but there is going to be a lot of feedback regarding the term two modules that we go through. There is also going to be a lot of feedback regarding the module selection process, which was one of the main things I was changing as a course rep, in regards to moving the module selection back a term so that it would be in sync with maths. I will see how the feedback comes in about that.
How do you see being a rep impacting your future?
It's definitely helped me in terms of organisation because I’ve had to chair multiple meetings this term due to scheduling conflicts for the senior course rep. It’s also going to help me as next year I’ll be a school rep so there is going to be a lot more on my plate. I’ve learned all kinds of skills like how to go through the meetings that a school rep and a course rep will have. This year as a course rep has helped me greatly for next year.
What is the best thing about being a rep?
Seeing your changes directly impact students. For instance, certain modules, that were previously banned on this year’s maths combination, that I pushed for, are available already this year and it is very good to see. It means that I’m making an impact for students now.
