As School Rep for Life Sciences and the Environment (LSE) and third-year Psychology student, Isabella Neergaard has been working hard to represent your academic interests.
She has been hosting meetings with Senior Course Reps, contacting Heads of Departments to solve issues related to MAB and talking to staff about possibilities for an LSE library and LSE Ball. She has also revived the School’s Instagram and has been publishing links from departments and events that are taking place with relevant societies - congratulations Isabella for receiving Rep of the Month in November!
Why did you want to become a rep?
I was heavily involved with the SU side of things already, being on committees, and I am quite an engaged student in general. So, when everything over summer happened last year with MAB and everything started to fly out, I sat around and said “oh no I think it would really good if someone took action” but if I want someone to take action, I should be the one taking action, so I decided to run. I’m just really thankful to be voted in by my fellow students.
What are your plans for the rest of the term?
I’m going to be running a few Senior Course Rep drop-ins. It will be really fun to have a little natter with our Senior Course Reps and see what’s going on in their departments. I want to kick up the Instagram a little bit more, get people on there and maybe do some ‘Day in the Lives’. It could be quite fun to see what people are up to. I have a few more meetings with University staff to see what we can do about marking and assessments ahead of the exam season. Hopefully, we can get everyone involved with LSE before Christmas.
For anyone who is in LSE, what’s your handle?
The handle for Instagram is @rhul_lsereps. If you search up ‘School of Life Sciences and the Environment’, it will also come up or if you look at any of the departments we should be tagged.
How do you see being a rep impacting your future?
So, I think being a rep in general involves a lot of leadership and initiative. Now that I am applying to further education, I can really see these are some skills that we need. There are plenty of others sitting in classrooms. I’m definitely going to have to take more initiative and going to have to practice my leadership skills. Being a School Rep is really setting me up into going into that role and setting me up to get an “adult job” at some point where I am going to have actual responsibilities. It’s getting me ready to succeed in both the academic and professional world.
What’s the best thing about being a rep?
The best thing about being a rep is definitely the socialising. I meet people from all over the university and all over the school. I get to meet people who work here, I get to meet people who study here and I get to meet people I have a lot in common with but I necessarily wouldn’t have met otherwise though my own degree or the extracurricular activities that I do. I get to talk to lots of people and have some laughs which is a really good thing for someone who likes to be social.
