Reclaiming the Narrative: An introduction to Black History Month

October is here which means one thing it is Black History Month. Every October Black History Month is celebrated in the UK.

BHM 2024

October is here which means one thing it is Black History Month. Every October Black History Month is celebrated in the UK. It provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions and achievements of Black students here at Royal Holloway and to raise awareness about the history and culture of the Black community in the UK.

As a student community, it's essential that we expand our understanding and appreciation of Black history, enabling us to take pride in and celebrate Black excellence. Learning about Black History reminds us that it is a vital part of our shared heritage, playing a significant role in shaping the UK as it is today.

This year’s theme for Black History Month is “Reclaiming Narratives,” and marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black History and Culture. We have had this at the heart of all our planning for this month. We’re Reclaiming the Narrative for Black students and Academics in shaping history at Royal Holloway by hosting a range of events that provide a space for both Black Academic and Students to meet, get involved and express themselves.

Meet your Black History Month Leads:

Olivia your VP Wellbeing & Diversity and Bana your VP Societies and Sports

Piya your Black & Global Majority Students Community Officer
