We're holding a referendum so that our members can vote on whether the Students' Union should become an incorporated organisation.
The Students’ Union is an unincorporated charity that was established under the Education Act 1994 and registered with the Charity Commission (No. 1141998) on 19 May 2011. This was due to SUs being removed from the list of exempt charities. At this time a Board of Trustees was established in line with our registration to the Charities Commission and the regulations set out in the Charities Act 2011.
Across the country, Students’ Unions have been reviewing their governance structures and legal identities and this has led to a large number becoming incorporated organisations. Our Trustees have taken the time to investigate this and want to ask the membership for their support in becoming an incorporated organisation.
So, the question being asked to members is:
Should the Union become an incorporated organisation?
Alongside the Summer Elections, we’ll be asking you to vote on the referendum from 7-9 May. We will be releasing more information in the coming days so you can make an informed decision on the topic, and there will also be an opportunity to hear more from the Officers at an open meeting which will be advertised soon.
