TW: suicide, cancer
Every November, students across campus raise money, make social media posts, and grow moustaches to support Movember.
Movember is a movement and campaign to fundraise and raise awareness for men’s health issues globally, focusing on support for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. Movember is the leading charity ‘changing the face of men’s health’, and since its origins in Australia in 2003, they have raised hundreds of millions of pounds and funded over 1,250 men’s health projects across the world.
A growing number of men are facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis, and globally testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. Across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of the day, with men accounting for 69% of all suicides. On average, men are dying 4.5 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. Movember pledges to improve men’s health globally, read more about their aims on their website.
Men don’t have to face these problems alone. Movember is about raising funds to fight these global issues, raising awareness on how to reduce these preventable deaths, and showing our support for all men going through these challenges. If you or anyone you know is currently struggling with any of these issues, we are here to support you. The University's Wellbeing service is available to all students, judgement-free. Movember provides signposting to the national services available to you, check them out.
Moustaches on campus
It’s fantastic to see so many groups, both societies and sports clubs, putting in so much effort to fundraise for men’s mental health. The compassion and support really shine through, and the work students put in makes me proud to be at Royal Holloway.
Over at the SU, me, Josh (Societies Coordinator), and Will (Sports Coordinator) are all growing out our 'tashs in solidarity with our groups and are supporting them in all their activities this month. Even if you’re not able to grow out a moustache for the month, there are still plenty of ways to get involved and show support, just keep an eye on what your groups are up to.
