As part of our campaign to encourage students to TURN UP AND VOTE in the upcoming General Election, we’re researching party manifestos on topics that matter to you based on the Student Manifesto. This is to ensure you can feel informed when making your vote.

Here is a summary of some of their aims surrounding supporting the LGBTQ+ Community:

Conservative

  • No mention of new aims to support the LGBTQ+ community but reference to the fact that they are proud of their work so far in delivering for LGBTQ+ people and will continue to do so. This includes the Same-Sex Marriage Act.

Green Party

  • Ensure that tailored and specific mental health provision is readily available for the needs of communities including the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Retain a full, evidence-based and age-appropriate programme of Relationships, Sex and Health Education, including LGBTQ+ content and resources.

Labour

  • Protect LGBTQ+ and disabled people by making all existing strands of hate crime an aggravated offence.
  • Deliver a full trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices, while protecting the freedom for people to explore their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Liberal Democrats

  • Offer asylum to people fleeing the risk of violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identification, ending the culture of disbelief for LGBT+ asylum seekers, and never refusing an LGBT+ applicant on the basis that they could be discreet.
  • Combat all forms of prejudice and discrimination, wherever they exist, including where intersectionality means individuals face particular disadvantages.
  • Require large employers to monitor and publish data on gender, ethnicity, disability, and LGBT+ employment levels, pay gaps and progression and publish five-year aspirational diversity targets.
  • Develop a comprehensive strategy for promoting the decriminalisation of homosexuality and advancing LGBTQ+ rights.

Reform UK

  • Ban transgender ideology in primary and secondary schools.
  • Mandate single-sex toilets and changing areas.
