Give it a go
If you’re looking to develop a new skill, flex your creative muscles, or simply unwind after a day of lectures, you’ll find something in our calendar of Give It A Go events.
These are smaller-scale events that are predominantly alcohol-free and focused on you meeting new people in a fun, relaxed and welcoming environment. Some highlights from Freshers' Festival include our Board Games Night, a Petting Zoo, a Trip to IKEA and loads more!
So whether you’re an adrenaline junkie, culture vulture or just love a bit of art and craft, we'll have something for you.
Take a Dance or exercise Class
Physical activity is a fantastic way to let loose, get some exercise, and have fun without needing to drink. Sign up for a class—whether it’s learn to lift or Zumba—and enjoy the rhythm and energy of the music. Why not have a look at the royal Holloway sports app for fun ways to get involved.
Join a Student Community
We have a variety of sports clubs, societies or academic and inclusion communities on campus that are all here to make sure you find your place here at Royal Holloway. Lots of them organise socials which are non-alcoholic spaces, and they’re a great way to connect with others in a healthy, positive environment. Why not have a look on our Student communities page to see how you can get involved.
Host a Mocktail Party
Who says you need alcohol to throw a great party? A mocktail party is a fun, inclusive way to gather your friends for a night of creativity and delicious drinks. You can experiment with colourful fruit juices, sparkling water, herbs, and syrups to create unique and refreshing beverages that everyone can enjoy. Try fun recipes like mojito mocktails, berry lemonades, or a tropical pineapple spritz. Not only are mocktails tasty, but they’re also a hit at any social gathering!
Host a Game Night
Invite your friends over for a game night, filled with board games, card games, or even video games. Games like Codenames, Pictionary, or even trivia competitions can turn any evening into a laughter-filled event. The best part? No one needs a drink to get competitive or to enjoy the company of good friends.
Explore New Hobbies
Ever wanted to try knitting, painting, photography, or cooking? Exploring new hobbies can be incredibly satisfying and fun. It’s a great way to spend time creatively and learn new skills. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to meet people who share your interests, whether at a local class or through online communities. You’ll find that the thrill of learning something new can be just as enjoyable (if not more!) than a night of drinking.
Take a Nature Walk or Hike
Sometimes, the best way to relax and have fun is to simply step outside. Whether it’s a walk-through a nearby park or a hike up a mountain trail, spending time in nature can be incredibly rejuvenating. The beauty of the outdoors, the fresh air, and the quiet serenity are a perfect way to clear your mind, improve your mood, and have a peaceful time away from the hustle and bustle.

Whether it’s making your own candles, customising your clothes, or creating unique home decor, there are endless possibilities when it comes to hands-on activities. Crafting is not only a relaxing and rewarding activity, but it also allows you to express your personal style and make something beautiful.
Explore Your City as a Tourist
Be a tourist in your own town! Take a day to explore local museums, art galleries, hidden coffee shops, or quirky shops you’ve never visited before. Not only will you discover something new, but you’ll also be able to enjoy your city in a completely different light, all while being fully present in the moment.
Movie Marathon
Grab some popcorn, cosy blankets, and your favourite films or TV shows, and invite friends over for a movie marathon. Whether you’re into comedies, documentaries, or classic films, a movie night is always a hit. You could also make it a themed movie night where everyone dresses up as their favourite character or brings snacks based on the film theme.
There’s no shortage of exciting activities and events that don’t revolve around alcohol. By embracing creativity, socialising in different ways, and exploring new hobbies, you’ll discover that having fun doesn’t require a drink in your hand. Whether you’re hosting a sober party, trying new activities, or enjoying the great outdoors, there are endless opportunities to have a good time and connect with others, all while staying healthy and present.
