VP Willow Wong updates us on the work to be commenced to keep the back gate open 24/7.
The closing of the back gate at night is an issue that has affected students for years – especially for students who are heading home after a long library visit or SU nights, as well as those who are work late night shifts on campus.
After years of lobbying the college through online petitions and our Bright Ideas platform, we’ve finally secured 24 hour access to the back gate for you – another sign that representation and student voice matters!
So what's happening next?
Over the next few months, Royal Holloway’s Estates Team will be overseeing the installation of a secure gate system with a swipe-card system, allowing 24 hour access for staff and students. There will also be upgraded lighting and CCTV to the back gate, which ensures the safety and security of our students.
This work will begin on 20 November, with the trial period for the back gate scheduled to be open on 1 December 2017.
As the College is located between the Englefield Green and Egham residential areas, it’s important for all students to remember our responsibility with regards to noise. The reality is that Royal Holloway students have a history of making excessive noise when entering or leaving the campus into the residential areas, especially in the later in the night when local residents are trying to get some sleep.
With that in mind, both the college and the Students’ Union will be monitoring the noise levels at the back gate during the trial period. If there are more noise complaints and anti-social behaviours from broadening the access via back gate, the college will not hesitate to revoke their decision to permanently open the back gate for 24/7.
Keep an eye out on the progress of the back gate over the next few months! As usual, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me or connect with me on Facebook.
