We are excited to announce that the College have agreed to provide over £100,000 of funding towards the repurposing of Stumble Inn into a high quality storage space specifically for student groups.
Commenting on the announcement, Co-President, Societies and Media, Pippa Gentry said: “For those of you ancient enough to remember the old socs cupboard in the Queens Annexe, you will know that we have struggled with storage ever since the building was knocked down last year.
“But now, for the first time ever, we’re going to have shiny new secure storage that will allow groups to safely, and tidily, store their equipment and access it whenever it’s needed.
“Storage is in no way glamourous or flashy but this is an incredibly exciting change for student groups, I never thought I’d be so pumped about storage cages, but here we are and I’m dreaming about metal racks.”
Utilising similar caging to that found in the Boiler House, it will include lockable areas and boxes, while the space will be built on a raised floor to combat against flooding. It will also feature first-rate security measures, such as high-grade locks and CCTV coverage.
Flooding
Following extensive flooding in the summer of 2015, we were forced to close the much-loved pub and replaced it with the Stumble Out. Surveys have since revealed that the site is at ongoing risk of flooding and is no longer suitable as a pub.
The decision to transform the area came about following extensive one-to-one meetings with student groups around the lack of high-quality storage space that they can utilise. Currently, there are no exclusive spaces on campus for this purpose.
The exact details are yet to be established as they are still being worked through. Reconfiguration work will be undertaken over the summer to be ready for the start of the new academic term.
Co-President, Sports and Development, Steff Milne said of the change: “The new storage will enable all student groups on campus to store equipment for their activities! There will be space for equipment of all sizes as well as a space specifically for valuable items.
“Storage has been a huge problem on campus for our groups so it is very exciting to be able to turn the old Stumble Inn space into something that will make life easier for a huge amount of students.”
We are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to make another large investment in our facilities that will have a massive impact on students. Alongside this is the upcoming opening of the new library and Union Shop, while funding has also been acquired to upgrade equipment storage at the Sports Centre.
