About us

We are a political society which aims to develop a community of shared social democratic values and play a key role in defining student politics on campus, locally and nationally.

Whether politics is your passion or you're a newcomer who wants to learn more Labour Society will welcome you with open arms. We host regular socials where students can meet other like-minded individuals and discuss and debate what matters most to you. Alongside this we offer exciting opportunites including a trip to the Houses of Parliament in Term 2, speaker events and collaborations with other political societies.

Some members may also wish to get involved with the Labour Party itself through campaigning. Our campaigners have travelled to by-elections and campaigned hard around the region during General Elections. However, we are most proud to support our local Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs) in Runnymede and Weybridge and Windsor during General and Local elections and will continue to do so. Whether you are an experienced campaigner or have never knocked a door the society will support you.

Students are welcome to join our society if they want to learn more about politics, campaign and engage with a community of shared values.

Membership

Membership to the society is annual and is currently priced at £5.00/year. You do not need to be a member of the Labour Party however it is advisable that you purchase a party membership for a further £3/year to be able to get involved with campaigning alongside other party events such as Labour Students' conference.

Membership gives access to everything the society has to offer. However, any members who wish to campaign will be advised to purchase a membership to the Labour Party itself if they havent got one already.

Our membership provides students with multiple opportunities to get involved with the society and take part in student politics.

Events and Activities

Labour Society offers a wide range of both social and campaigning opportunities throughout the academic year:

  • Regular socials: We aim to host a social every two weeks where members can meet to discuss current affairs both nationally and internationally. On some occasions we will theme our events depending on the political climate. We will also aim to organise socials with other political societies on campus to engage directly with politics on campus.
  • Houses of Parliament: Early in Term 2 we will be organising a trip to Westminster where we will be given a tour around parliament as well as holding Q and A with current MPs/government ministers on their responsibilities at such an exciting time in UK politics.
  • Speaker Events: We will aim to put on speaker events where we will host politicians and experts who will come to discuss their field and answer your questions.
  • Campaigning: This year we are looking towards the May 2025 Local Elections. Those who wish to campaign will work alongside local CLP activists in the months before to elect/re-elect councillors. We will also look into opportunities to participate in national Labour Students events.
  • Local and Campus Campaigns: To develop ties with the university and the local community we will aim to raise money for agreed charities and spread campus-wide awareness for important university, SU and local campaigns.
  • Party Events: As well as campaigning, a party membership will give you access to CLP meetings and local party socials. We will also support anybody who wishes to attend Labour Students Conference 2025.
