About us
As the Ballroom and Latin Dancesport Society we offer 10 different styles of dance which is taught to us by a Professional Coach. These styles of dance are the same as the ones seen on BBC’s Strictly!
Over the academic year, as a group we will be competing all over the country whilst representing our University. Tail suits, sparkly dresses and a day filled with so much fun!
Learn new skills whilst becoming a family of friends with the people around you and form a love for dance. The year is also packed with socials and events to celebrate all the achievements so make sure to get your calendars ready!
Membership
Become a member of one of the friendliest communities on campus!
Professional coaching will be held once a week, whilst an additional day will be led by Committee. Membership gives each person the opportunity to represent Royal Holloway at competitions, including Blackpool and Varsity. In addition, the memberships will also allow each member of the society to receive discounts at events, such as Strictly come Holloway and free social lessons once a week.
Lesson Levels:
- Beginner
- Novice
- Pre-Intermediate/Advanced
There is no previous experience required to join at any of these levels. It is advised that you join the level you feel is most appropriate for you and our current committee are ready to answer any queries about classes, so don't be afraid to get in touch with us on our instgram page!
Standard Membership = students
Associate Membership = people that are not a student at the university.

Lesson Structure:
Monday (with the professional coach):
- Novice - 18:00 - 19:20
- Beginner - 19:20 - 20:40
- Intermediate- 20:40 - 22:00
Tuesday (Later half of T1 and first half of T2 will be with the professional coach) :
- Novice - 18:00 - 19:20
- Beginner - 19:20 - 20:40
- Intermediate - 20:40 - 22:00
Ballroom and Latin lessons consist of all the key steps and techniques of many famous dances, including the waltz, the jive and the cha cha.. Our professional coach has around 30 years of Ballroom and Latin experience as he has competed and taught around the world, so if there's anyone who knows all-things ballroom it's him!
Strictly Come Holloway is a fundraising competition within the university with the sports teams which we hold at the end of T1 every year. This is another opportunity to show your dance to your friends and family while making new friends around campus and raising money for a charity of the society's choosing.
In term 2, we are planning in competing in the IVDC compeitions held in Blackpool, just like the dancers on Strictly! Here you will experience the glitz and glamour of ballroom competitions, while making memories that you will treasure for years to come! Also in term 2, we will be travelling to Surrey this year to represent our society in Varisty against Surrey, a long-standing tradition that is a fun-filled day for the whole university.
Furthermore, there are 2 Award Nights in the academic year solely dedicated to the achievements of the members of our society. One will be held at Christmas and the other in Term 2.Potentially, we are hoping to compete in a competition in term 1 and will update members with information surrounding competitions and showcases on our whatsapp.
