WELCOME TO THE ROYAL HOLLOWAY GAMES SOCIETY

Your place for all things gaming on campus! From Board Games to Esports we host all sorts to scratch your gaming itch.

About Us

Here at the Games Society, we aim to create a space where everyone is welcome to participate and enjoy gaming to its fullest. We host a range of activities during term time, with our Monday board game night and Friday video game nights being the cornerstone of our term time activities. We like to host big events too - our 24-hour charity livestream has been hosted annually since 2018, raising over £15,000 for SpecialEffect, and our esports teams take part in the annual varsity competition against the University of Surrey, showcasing the best Royal Holloway has to offer in competitive video games.

What We Offer!

Table Top RPGs
TTRPGs are role-playing games, like Dungeons & Dragons, where players play a character and work with a group of friends to progress through a story. Here at Gamesoc, we run one-shots at the beginning of each term to give you a chance to meet others and learn the basics of your system, as well as provide you with spaces and resources to run your own campaigns throughout the year! We host monthly sessions where people can learn a new system, as well as a character creation workshop and a DM's Guide to DMing session at the start of the year.

Board Games
Gamesoc offers a welcoming environment for board and card game enthusiasts of all levels. We have a variety of games, from classics like Pandemic and Catan to party games like Wavelength. Whether you're a board games veteran or your experience stops at Uno, you're welcome to join us and try out new games with others, or even bring your own games to share! Gamesoc also has a friendly community of trading card game players, primarily focused on Magic: The Gathering. Newcomers are encouraged to join in, even with borrowed or self-printed cards. Our weekly Monday board game socials are a great opportunity to meet and play with fellow board game enthusiasts!

Video Games
Every Friday we host a casual video game session where we crack out our large inventory of Wii, GameCube, Xbox and PC games for you to enjoy with friends. Plus, we regularly spice up our Friday night sessions with Smash tournaments and 'Casual Clashes' allowing you to get involved in a new way to play well-loved games.  Our Friday sessions are a great way to help you unwind after a long week, and players of any skill level or experience are welcome!

Wargames

Wargames at Gamesoc focus on strategy and creativity, where players build and paint models to use in tabletop battles. While Warhammer 40,000 is the most popular game, other systems like Age of Sigmar, Star Wars Legion, and Bolt Action are also played. Members can participate in games or simply watch, chat, or paint their models. Weekly Sunday sessions are announced on Discord, and the community is welcoming to both newcomers and experienced players. Gamesoc also hosts occasional socials outside of these sessions, making it easy to get involved in the hobby and community.

Esports

Esports at Royal Holloway is managed by a dedicated sub-committee and offers members opportunities to represent RHUL in national leagues such as NSE and University Esports UKI (formerly NUEL), the most popular games being VALORANT, Counter-Strike, Overwatch, and League of Legends. Top players can join the Royal Bears teams and be selected to compete in the annual varsity LAN tournament against the University of Surrey.

For those seeking a more casual experience, we host watch parties and LAN events both on campus and online. Whether you're aiming to go pro or just want to have fun, everyone is welcome to join and participate!
