Recycle Your Cycle
Got bikes that are taking up space? Bring them along to be collected and fixed up as part of an innovative programme in partnership with the HM Prison Service in the UK.
What do they do?
Recycle Your Cycle are passionate about supporting disadvantaged groups within communities as well as prisoner rehabilitation and breaking the cycle of reoffending. To help, they set up bicycle repair workshops in prisons to help those in need to gain new skills and improve their employment prospects.
They collect abandoned bicycles which are taking up space and would otherwise end up in landfill, usually from Universities, police stations, housing associations and bicycle retailers.
They deliver these bicycles to workshops across the UK and train prisoners to refurbish them, equipping them with technical skills that they can use to gain employment. They have workshops set up in 10 prisons and more joining soon.
Once the bikes have been refurbished and skills have been gained, bikes are supplied to UK charity retailers for them to sell to raise additional funds. Currently, they are working with over 20 UK charities and are always looking for more to partner with.
The benefits are:
1. Reduce landfill
2. Provide meaningful work to offenders
3. Improve the employment prospects for offenders
4. Raise additional funds for UK charities
5. Provide the social, health and commuting benefits to a wider section of the community
Make sure to come along to find out more and help out between 10am and 5pm on Tuesday 25th March outside the SU under the small canopy!
