Flawless ft. S1mba

It wouldn't be Refreshers without Flawless and we're welcoming you back with a special performance from Zimbabwean-born British singer-songwriter and rapper, S1mba.

We'll also be welcoming back DJ TOM R and DJ CeeB who will be pumping out the hottest urban, bashment, grime and Afrobeats tunes all night long.

S1mba

As the world locked down in March 2020, a hyper-catchy hook weaved across international airwaves. “Rover”, from Zimbabwean born artist S1MBA, blasted through continents after a TikTok challenge based on the track’s shape-forming melodies became a quarantine craze.

By the following spring, its word-of-mouth rise solidified into a blockbuster moment. Having pumped from car windows, lockdown cook-outs and socially distanced functions for over a year, the afro-influenced track racked up a coveted BRIT Award nomination for Best British Single. To date, “Rover’s” original music video uploaded to UK channel Link UP TV has over 22 million views.

The success of "Rover" led to follow-up singles with chart-busting acts like KSI on 2020 vibe-crafter “Loose” and Tion Wayne on this year’s sleek-and-smooth single “Bounce”.

Debut mixtape ‘Good Time Long Time’ is the culmination of S1MBA’s scene-clambering ascent so far. Firmly rooted in who he is, the mixtape’s artwork features the name mowed into a lawn, reflecting back to S1MBA’s teenage UK years, when he helped his dad garden people’s houses.

“It all played a part, “he says. “A lot of money I made from helping my dad went into my craft – it’s all a cycle. So I felt it was only right for me to showcase where I came from”.

Across ‘Good Time Long Time’, S1MBA’s bright perspective revolves around bringing warm energies and confidence-exuding atmospheres together. “We’ve been in lockdown and no one has had a good time in lockdown,” he says. “I want people to hear the tape and feel like they’re back in a time where they can party in a club, or go to a BBQ, and there’s no complications.”

Having come up while the world was locked down, S1MBA’s next step is focused on pushing things forward. “I want good vibes with this tape,” he says. “I want you to feel happy about life again. I want you to feel comfortable to go out and dance.” One lyric from the tape’s airy title track defines the artistic approach best: “You’ve got to be who you are.”

Bringing guests to the SU

Please note that due to COVID-19 safety measures, no guests are currently allowed within the Union Venue.

COVID-19 entry requirements

As well as bringing your Royal Holloway College Card and photographic proof of age ID, you'll also need to show proof of one of the below, preferably via the NHS COVID Pass:

DOUBLE VACCINATION - you received your second COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 whole days ago (or 14 whole days after one dose of the Janssen vaccine).

or

NEGATIVE TEST - a negative lateral flow or PCR test taken in the 48 hours prior to the event.

or

NATURAL IMMUNITY - evidenced by a positive PCR test result for COVID-19, lasting for 180 days from the date of the positive test and following completion of the self-isolation period.

If you live, or were vaccinated in, an overseas country, we will also be accepting EU (EU Digital COVID Certificate) and USA (CDC card) vaccine certificates.

NHS COVID Pass

An NHS COVID Pass shows your coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination details or test results.

You can get a digital version using the NHS App or using the online NHS COVID Pass service. You can download it as a PDF or get it sent to you in an email.

Please note, the COVID-19 vaccination card that you receive after your vaccine is not considered acceptable proof of vaccination.

Find out more

If you are unable to use the NHS COVID Pass, or either of the additional certificates listed above, you will need to provide proof of a negative lateral flow test, reported and demonstrated via a text message or email from the NHS self-report tool. The test needs to be taken in the 48 hours prior to the event.

Lateral flow testing

The on-campus, asymptomatic testing site is now closed but you can still take a lateral flow test (LFT) by ordering home test kits from the NHS. If you're living in halls, you can collect your ordered test kits from Founder's West (FW40) from 10:00-13:00 or 13:30-18:00. We strongly encourage you to take two LFTs a week to help protect our campus community.

Cashless campus

All of our venues are cashless and will remain so in the 2021/22 academic year. We are aware that when starting university, some of you will not yet have a bank account and if you’re an international student, you may not have a UK bank account when you arrive in the UK to study. To facilitate this, all students will be able to top up their College card account before arriving on campus, using Upay.

Accessibility

As your Students' Union, we're keen to promote equality of opportunity for people with disabilities and to take the necessary steps to meet their requirements - that's why we've ensured that everything we do is accessible to as many of you as possible.

All of our venues are wheelchair accessible via shallow ramps; you can find out more about our venues and view our AccessAble pages by heading to our Accessibility page.

If you or someone you know requires access to special facilities, please email venues@su.rhul.ac.uk and our friendly team will do their best to meet your needs.
