Please outline why you’re running for the position, and any skills/experience you possess which would enable you to be successful if elected:
I am running for Student Union President because I want to improve student life, ensure every voice is heard, and create real change on campus. Having worked with Hall Life, Residential Facilities, and the SU Shop, I understand how things operate and can address key student issues effectively.
As a Project Leader for the Volunteering Hub’s ‘Donate and Reuse’ initiative, I led community-driven efforts to support students and promote sustainability. Additionally, as a Senior Advisor for a student society, I have guided committees, enhanced student engagement, and helped shape successful events.
With experience in event management, student advocacy, and problem-solving, I will work to create a more inclusive, connected, and supportive campus. I believe in collaboration, transparency, and action, and I’m committed to making student voices count.
Let’s work together to make our university a better place for everyone!
Outline your top 8 priorities in ranking order:
- Improve Maintenance and Support for University Halls of Residence
- More financial support for students
- Improve street lighting in the local area
- Longer opening hours at food outlets
- More affordable food options on campus
- More daytime events
- Make SU events more affordable and accessible
- Run more departmental events and networking opportunities for undergraduates and postgraduates
For your top 3 priorities, identify 1 or 2 actions you would achieve to address the issue:
-
1) Improve Maintenance and Support for University Halls of Residence
I will introduce a real-time maintenance tracker, allowing students to monitor repair progress and receive automatic updates. I will push for a 24/7 emergency maintenance team to handle urgent issues like heating failures and leaks promptly. Additionally, I will advocate for regular maintenance inspections to prevent recurring issues. A student-led Hall Committee will meet monthly with university accommodation services to escalate unresolved concerns and ensure student feedback is prioritized for better living conditions.
-
2) More Financial Support for Students
I will ensure the hardship fund is more accessible by pushing for clearer eligibility criteria and a faster application process. I will advocate for more frequent interest-free loans and flexible tuition fee deadlines, allowing students to pay in multiple manageable installments. I will negotiate increased bursaries by reallocating unused university funds. Additionally, I will secure student discounts on groceries, travel, and essentials while pushing for a university job portal for part-time roles and internships.
-
3) Improve Street Lighting in the Local Area
I will survey students to identify poorly lit areas and push for council-funded streetlight installations in high-risk locations. Where permanent infrastructure is delayed, I will work with campus security to install solar-powered lighting. Additionally, I will introduce a “Safe Walk” program, where trained volunteers accompany students at night on frequently used routes. Lastly, I will collaborate with local landlords and businesses to improve lighting around student rental areas and off-campus accommodations.
