As your VP Societies and Sport I propose:

• Better Safety and Accessibility
Late night and off-campus student groups often encounter student safety issues. Making training, activities and events inaccessible and unappealing creating a barrier for student groups. Populations such as women and LGBTQ+ can feel more affected by this.
I propose access and development funding be put towards student groups to financially combat safety issues. Safety should not be an inhibitor for students trying to socialise. Furthermore, to ensure a safe student environment, committees shouldn’t be forced to put their group into debt.
Safety and welfare should be the primary focus for the Student Union and support should be provided in a fair, economical way.


• Student Recognition and Celebration
We should celebrate achievements. Promotion of all events and competitions allows groups to be seen and encourages participation.
I support better exposure and coverage of student group events taking place on, and off campus. Consistent acknowledgment of student achievement should take place throughout the year.
Inclusive recognition shows the importance of all groups, particular support should be provided to societies and off-campus sports.


• More Effective Expense Claims Process
Our lengthy expense claim process involves multiple people and takes weeks. Consequentially during a cost-of-living crisis this causes financial issues for students.
I propose a direct approach allowing claims to be processed more quickly.
Groups should not be in debt to their members for extended time periods.


• Communication with Students Union
Running your student committees well takes time and effort and groups often require help from the Student Union. Therefore, clear communication between the Union and groups will ensure the implementation of effective strategies.

I am running for VP Societies & Sport to make sure students get an exemplary experience at RHUL. With previous experience in leadership, including being the president of the MENA society, Head girl, and the editor-in-chief of my high school’s newsletter, I aim to make RHUL a second home by improving sports and societies.
My foremost objective as VP Societies & Sport is to enhance athletic performance, we at RHUL have a great diversity of talent that should be invested in. Having Strength and Conditioning classes tailored to our athletes’ needs will improve physical fitness and also foster team spirit among our athletes. I will ensure that all sport teams will have equal opportunities to excel in their respective sports.
Having a high-quality gym facility to meet the diverse needs of our student body is important, if elected I aim to liaise with Gladstone to address any concerns and improve the gym. This includes upgrading equipment, extending operating hours, and implementing new fitness programs to cater to the varied interests and capabilities of our students.
As an international student I believe that societies play a vital role and are the backbone of our community, they act as platforms for students to pursue their passions and connect with individuals that share the same interests. They even serve as a medium for internationals to connect with others and creating a sense of home, celebrating their unique cultures and traditions. I will dedicate my time to empower them, by working closely with their leaders and providing aid whenever they are in need.
I believe in open communication, freedom of speech, and transparency. If elected I will hold regular meetings with heads of societies and sports for them to voice their concerns and for us to find solutions and solve them together. I will be providing regular updates on my progress and initiatives, keeping you all informed. Together we can build a stronger university community, and vote for a brighter future.

Hello, my name is Charlie, I’m a final year computer science student who has been deeply involved with both sports clubs and societies across my years at Royal Holloway! I’m the club captain of Ultimate Frisbee with two years of committee experience, an elected member of the SSO panel and I've been a casual attendee of multiple Royal Holloway societies.

I'm running for VpSocSport because student groups have been such an amazing community to be a part of, and I hope you’ll all agree that they make our student experience the very best it can be. I want to make sure student groups are valued and supported the way they deserve!

If elected, I will strive to:

Improve bookings systems for societies and clubs:
• Increase the amount of spaces available to student groups across campus
• Make the pitch booking process for clubs simpler
• Lobby for more pitch time for clubs to use for events and training


Provide adequate storage for student groups on campus:
• Lobby to provide sports clubs with a secure, clean and sizeable place to store any kit they require
• Clear out storage inn to free up more space for society storage
• Improve the longevity of storage on campus


Better representation of student groups within the SU and the university as a whole
• Help raise awareness for the achievements of student groups by introducing weekly shoutouts on VpSocSport instagram and email newsletters
• Improve the training of university staff receive about the SU and student groups to increase understanding of student group activities and achievements
• Include weekly shoutouts in university staff newsletters
• Promote the championing of student group achievement from university staff

Hi, I’m Harrison and I’m running to be your next VP Societies & Sport.

If I’ve learnt anything in my four years of being a student at Royal Holloway, it’s how our campus student groups work. Throughout my time here, I have held eight different committee positions including that of the Tennis president for the past two years.

This role has allowed me to understand the fundamentals of student group and club success. Furthermore, I have competed for both BUCS/LUSL sports (Tennis and Lacrosse) so have an understanding as to the challenges both captains and committees face in organisation of areas such as training or match fixture organisation.

I have also undertaken the role of Sports Societies Executive, which means I work closely with the current VP in both understanding and resolving relevant matters. This means I have a fundamental understanding of what’s running smoothly, and what further needs to be improved.

As your VP, I promise to make real change, to listen to student voice and to fundamentally improve your societies and sports. I’m not here to be another name on the board, but to be someone who changes students' experiences completely.

I have briefly outlined my main agenda below.
1. Promoting equality between student groups.
   
   I believe every student group is important, whether it has 5 members or 50, on campus or off campus. I aim to ensure there is consistency and fairness across all student groups. I will begin by promoting a culture of transparency – helping students to understand why their matches are scheduled at certain times, or why there may be priorities on room bookings.
   
   In addition to this, breaking down ‘societies’ even more than they currently are is so important, for example, PakSoc will not have the same aims as Dance Society, I believe this idea needs to be engaged further.
2. Incentives for committee members
   
   A strong committee, for any Society is imperative. However, how are committees actually rewarded for their amazing efforts throughout the year? One plan I want to introduce early is some way to recognise these members across campus aside from Colours/Society awards, through schemes such as free CIYK/S tickets or dedicated dinner/drinks events for them in addition to ‘committee cafes’.

Hi, I’m James, I’m a Post-grad student and I’m running to be your VPSocSport! Student groups have played an incredibly large role in my time at uni, and no doubt do for many of you too. Be it from sports clubs to societies, what underpins our enjoyment is the community that we are part of - from which I have grown greatly because of and am deeply grateful for. Because of this, I want to work to strengthen these opportunities for you!

With three years of being on committee for GameSoc and working directly with the SU, alongside unique exposure of the behind-the-scenes at the main office thanks to working on the SU Helpdesk, I'm well accustomed to what is expected and required of me as an individual and the work that I will do.

Boosting community engagement!
It should be easier for the wider student body to see what groups achieve and get involved themselves - we can do this by showcasing group activities and competitions on SU media and in-campus spaces, while also giving more opportunities for groups to get involved in SU-run events. I’d also like to build the bridge between competitive and casual groups within sports-related fields by working with clubs and RHUL Sport, as there can be a divide between the two sides. The more ways to engage, the stronger the overall community can be brought together!

Improving the tools to build communities!
To make sure you have the best experience possible with student groups, I want to ensure that they are properly equipped to host their activities effectively. From reviewing the advice and information the SU provides, to the physical resources available, it’s vital that we set up student groups with the right tools - the more confident they can be in running, the better events we get to enjoy together.

While our studies may be the main reason we’re here, exploring and enjoying our hobbies and interests is just as important - and you deserve to have the best time possible in the groups you engage in. With your vote, I will keep your interests at heart and aim to build a community that all can be welcome and proud of.

Hi everyone, 

My name is Luca, and I am a final-year Law student. I believe that Sports and Societies are integral to the student experience at university.  I am running for VP SocSport because I want to lead to the improvement of the society and sports experience for everyone.

Leading as Vice President of the law society and being a member of the Sports, Societies & Opportunities Executive, I have truly understood the importance of Societies and Sports on campus, and all the challenges confronting student groups. With my objectives below, alongside my experience with committee roles, I am committed to enhancing the experiences of everyone involved in Societies, Sports and Media in the coming academic year and make it the best it can be!

If elected, my three key objectives would be:

1. Inclusivity & Accessibility
   • Tackling the financial costs of joining and partaking in Societies and Sports by making the access fund process more transparent and easily accessible to students as well as looking at increasing the money put into the access fund.
   • Prioritising and giving preferential treatment to RHUL Sports teams when allocating access to sports facilities.
   • Making rooms and space available during the day, meaning those who commute or have part-time jobs in the evening can still partake in events. 
   • Encouraging flexible membership options for student groups, including potential fee reductions for commuting students, per-term payments and for those who are social-focused members!
2. Community
   • Improved communication, faster email responses and direct engagement with student groups will help bridge the gap between the SU and our student groups and their members. 
   • Encouraging a balance between drinking and non-drinking events.
   • Making rooms and space available during the day, meaning those who commute or have part-time jobs in the evening can still partake in events. 
   • Rebranding Refreshers Fair by showcasing newer and smaller student groups and having interactive elements such as pet therapy as well as hosting it in a better location. 
3. Recognition
   • Every group deserves equal support and recognition, I would strive to make my presence known at events and fixtures. 
   • I would actively make an effort to show support by highlighting and sharing societies, sports and media groups’ successes and events on social media and SU newsletters. 



Societies and Sports at RHUL have been an integral part of my university experience and with your vote, we can strive to create a more accessible and inclusive community and to build a better, more unified university experience!
