Hanna Blom

Candidate for VP Education

Hanna Blom.

I am an English Literature student in my final year of study. I moved here from Sweden after spending two years working and travelling, and would like to prolong my stay as your VP for Education.

Throughout my time at Royal Holloway, I have been very involved with my department and the SU. This has predominantly been through my role as course rep in which I have had great success in lightening the workload of future third year students, and ensuring that students get their first choice of module. It is this success that I wish to continue as VP for Education.

I will review the current systems to utilise spaces across campus as study spaces. The new library has 1,140 study seats, but spaces are scarce. They are now creating more space by re-opening Founders’ reading room etc., but this will still not sufficiently supply enough students with seats. Given that the student intake is set to be raised, the issue will only get worse. I will therefore work to create a user-friendly booking system, which allows for the additional use of unused seminar rooms.

I will lobby for more choice for students over how they are assessed. Our current university guidelines limit the choice on how students are assessed. I will work with the departments to develop a program to form student pathways. I want to allow students to have at least two different forms of assessment to choose from for their summative work. This will enable students to choose the way that most suits their strengths.

I will create a process for lecture capturing throughout the university. Whilst many students would benefit from this, the university does not have satisfactory guidelines and technology in place. I will therefore make sure that lecture rooms have the technology to record lectures in a simple way. The capturing will be mandatory with the ability to opt out. I will also lobby procedures to secure intellectual property and student attendance.

I will rework the course rep system so that students from every department have the same opportunity to have a say. The SU’s extensive Academic Representation Review highlighted key issues in need of improvement. Of these, I will focus especially on forming a platform that will ensure easier communication between reps and students, and on creating a college-wide framework for the election of reps, and their responsibilities.
