Vice-President Welfare & Diversity

Steven Francis Pettitt

Manifesto

Hi, I’m Steven, and I’m a 3rd year Ecology & The Environment student. I have had my fair share of struggles during my studies, and have worked hard to learn about and improve myself, and defeat my personal demons.

I have taken an active role in the Games Society, having been on the committee for these last two years (yes, I’m a nerd), and for this year I have been on the committee for the Liberal Democrat society – which has done pretty decent for its first year ratified. I am grateful to have worked with such wonderful committees

Moving onto my campaigning points:

  • Firstly, I wish to strive for open-mindedness and tolerance. As such, I aim to promote open debates between students on a wide range of issues, under an environment where every student has an opportunity to voice their opinion without vitriol or other forms of antagonism. It is fine to disagree, and it is healthy to debate with honesty, challenging views you disagree with.
  • Next I will ensure that SU facilities and venues remain accessible, especially new venues (such as the Packhorse, which will require some attention). It is important that no disabled students are unable to enter these venues.
  • A big issue which is set to arise is the lack of late night street lighting (as a result of cuts from the local council). I will promote campaigning to reverse this, such as a #LetThereBeLight campaign, where students can voice their concerns over the increased danger that this may result in. At the least, there should be lighting for SU nights and other major events – walking home late at night (drunk or not), especially in cold & wet conditions with little lighting, is an unacceptable level of risk for students to be subject to.
  • Promotion of the soon to be revived Houseview, and improvement of it, is something I feel is important for the welfare of students. It can be stressful finding housemates (that you’d want to live with), booking viewings, and eventually finding finances to take a house off the market. It is crucial that this is made easier for students in order to minimise this stress.
  • Every student should have a voice and sufficient representation, so I aim to make sure that groups of students that do feel they have some form of representation are able to find it.
