 ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Students’ Union has been interested in better understanding sports and physical activity opportunities at Royal Holloway and whether there are barriers to engagement for specific communities on campus. Former and current Sabbatical Officers have raised these issues in their manifestos, and it was time to take a deeper look at sports service provision, how students prioritised their physical health and whether there is a correlation between sport, physical activity and academic success. We ran the survey in Term Two and hosted a paid, in-person focus group to examine this area of the student experience. Keep reading to find out the results of the survey below!

The Results

487 students across all year groups participated in the survey.

We learned more about the type of sports and physical activities students participated in and the time spent doing those activities.

We learned about the types of barriers which prevent students from accessing sports and physical activities at Royal Holloway. We additionally asked them whether they felt their Royal Holloway Sports Fitness membership was good value for money.

Students told us about their experience participating in a Students’ Union student group that participates in sport or physical activity, whether they felt their student group membership is value for money, their experience with the Student Group Access Fund and feelings around staff support.

Students talked about their experience with belonging and loneliness and how they form friendships at Royal Holloway. We also learned how they learn about events and activities, how many students use the Royal Holloway Sports App, and whether they think there is a correlation between sport, physical activity and academic success.

Next Steps

We have shared the full results with Active Lifestyle & Sport as well as other key University and Students’ Union stakeholders. We are currently in the process of writing up our analysis and composing a list of recommendations which we will be sharing with you soon!
