Over the weekend a number of media outlets began reporting that a #Victoriamustfall campaign had been started by Royal Holloway students, and more specifically, the BME campaign within the Students’ Union. This is completely untrue.

We’re issuing this statement on behalf of the students to clear up all of the matters around it. The #ITooAmRoyalHolloway campaign focussed around the inclusion of BME students at Royal Holloway, and the ways that non-white students can be stereotyped or ostracised. The campaign does not call for the removal of the statue of Queen Victoria in Founder’s North Quad, and nor has any hashtag been coined as the slogan for any such campaign.
On behalf of the students who have worked to develop the BME campaign, and worked to raise the profile of BME students and racial structures on campus, we’ve felt the need to set things straight. Please do not acknowledge these factually incorrect claims, and please do not target the students who are trying to make the campus into a safer place for all of our students.
